FAO - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was founded at Quebec, Canada, in October 1945 when its member nations agreed to work together to secure a lasting peace through freedom from want. The membership of FAO now stands at 107 nations.

Unasylva - Started in 1947 by MARCEL LELOUP, first Director of the Forestry and Forest Products Division, this quarterly publication is intended to cover a range of interests as wide as that of the Division whose work it mirrors. Signed articles express the opinions of the authors and do not necessarily represent the views of the Organization.

Cover photograph: Jamaican forest guards being trained in soil testing. Technical training for subprofessional cadres is best conducted under the direct control of a forest service, with considerable attention given to training in manual working methods. Practical training must be underskilled supervision, with a staff-to-student ratio of 1 to 10.
