FAO in Hungary
Cooperation between Hungary and FAO dates back 30 years, when the first FAO office opened in Budapest in 1995. The partnership has continued to grow, with Hungary providing continuous support to the achievement of the FAO Strategic Objectives. The country is now an active resource partner to FAO’s technical assistance, particularly in the region, as well as hosting the Organization's Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia and its Global Shared Services Centre.
FAO Priorities in Hungary
Hungary has been hosting FAO's Global Shared Service Centre since 2008 and its Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia since 2007. Prior to that, the FAO Subregional Office for Central and Eastern Europe operated in Budapest for 11 years, before merging into the Regional Office in 2007. Since then, the country has been hosting since then the Informal Consultations and the European Commission on Agriculture, a Statutory body for the region, which convenes meetings between the sessions of the Regional Conference for Europe, the Governing body of FAO for the region. Since 1972, Hungary has been the host of the Codex Committee of Methods of Analysis and Sampling, which is responsible for the evaluation and endorsement of analytical and sampling methods to be used for testing compliance with standards of the FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission. In the past almost 20 years, the joint FAO–Hungary scholarship has provided valuable learning opportunities for young agricultural specialists from all over the world.
