Evaluation syntheses

Evaluation syntheses look at the main results in the regional priorities and thematic areas that have been achieved through FAO support to regions and countries. They identify what issues and gaps emerge from the evaluations and what lessons can be learned from evaluations that can inform FAO’s future programming and actions.

FAO’s contributions in the Africa and Europe regions

These evaluation syntheses of projects and programmes implemented in the FAO Africa and Europe region identify lessons that can contribute to an informed discussion of FAO’s strategic positioning and contribution to results and provide suggestions for future work planning at the regional level.

The regional synthesis aim to answer the following key questions:

  • Results through FAO support to the region. What are the main results in the regional priorities/thematic areas that have been achieved through FAO support to the region and countries in the region?
  • Emerging issues and gaps. What issues and gaps emerge from the evaluations which require attention by the FAO Regional Conference?
  • Lessons to be learned. What lessons can be learned from evaluations that can inform FAO’s future programming and actions in the region?

The syntheses conducted in 2021 covered evaluations completed between 2020 and 2021, including project, thematic and country programme evaluations.

A sample of 42 evaluation reports were analysed under the following themes for Africa:

  • Sustainable production and value chain development
  • Food security and nutrition
  • Climate change and natural resources
  • Resilience to threats and crises
  • Gender equality and empowerment of women as a cross-cutting theme

A sample of 15 reports were selected to analyze results achieved through FAO’s support to the Europe and Central Asia region under the regional initiatives, as the main programmatic instrument for aligning FAO’s work with the most crucial priorities in the region.

  • Empower smallholders, family farms and youth, facilitating rural livelihoods and poverty reduction
  • Improve agri-food trade and market integration
  • Manage natural resources sustainably, under a changing climate
  • Gender equality and empowerment of women as a cross-cutting theme
