Statistics and Emerging Trends

Organic agriculture is practised in 187 countries, and 72.3 million hectares ofagricultural land were managed organically by at least 3.1 million farmers. The global sales of organic food and drink reached more than 106 billion euros in 2019.

The 22nd edition of The World of Organic Agriculture, published by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL and IFOAM – Organics International, provides a comprehensive review of recent developments in global organic agriculture. It presents detailed organic farming statistics covering the area under organic management, land use and crops in organic systems, the number of farms and other operator types and selected market data.

The book includes contributions from representatives of the organic sector around the world about the global market for organic food, organic imports, standards and regulations, Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS), public food procurement in the organic sector and insights into current and emerging trends in organic agriculture in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and Oceania.
This year’s edition also includes information describing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the organic sector.
