The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a new brochure "How can Codex standards help tackle foodborne antimicrobial resistance (AMR)?" which explains how Codex standards help tackle foodborne antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

This new reference document describes the three core texts Codex has developed specifically on foodborne AMR:

• The Guidelines for Risk Analysis of Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance (CXG 77-2011) enable countries to identify issues specific to their own contexts, establish priorities and implement targeted interventions.
• The Guidelines on the Integrated Monitoring and Surveillance of Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance (CXG 94-2021) outline key components and considerations to offer flexible options for tracking AMR in the food system.
• The Code of Practice to Minimize and Contain Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance (CXC 61-2005) presents the underlying principles and effective strategies for responsible and prudentantimicrobial use to be applied in preventing and reducing the need for antimicrobials in agrifood systems and minimizing the contamination of food with antimicrobial resistant bacteria.

“Codex texts provide management options to help countries develop and implement effective strategies and policies to minimize and contain AMR-related risks along the food chain", said Myoengsin Choi, FAO Food Standards Officer, "We hope that this brochure will help countries with an overview of the key Codex texts relevant to AMR”.

The brochure is part of the “Action to support implementation of Codex AMR texts (ACT)” project.
