Reduce Rural Poverty

Distress migration

Rural people, especially women and youth, usually migrate in search of better opportunities. Poverty, food insecurity, lack of employment opportunities, natural resource depletion and environmental degradation are some of the reasons people leave their region or country. However, migration is increasingly becoming a forced choice. FAO works to address the root causes of migration by improving livelihoods of rural people where they are and facilitating policy dialogue at a government level to improve the local opportunities of the rural poor.
