Mesoamerica recently reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating hunger at the Third Summit of Latin American and Caribbean States, where Heads of State adopted the CELAC plan for Food Security and Hunger Eradication 2025.  In so doing, they once again demonstrated their political determination to have all inhabitants achieve the dream of enjoying the right to food.

FAO Subregional Office for Mesoamerica (SLM)

The FAO Subregional Office for Mesoamerica (SLM) has been located in Panama City since 2007.

Recognizing that the solution to the problem of hunger is primarily one of political will, the SLM presence serves to facilitate the coordination of the Organization's work with various regional institutions and with Governments.

At the same time, the Subregional Office liaises with FAO's National Representatives in the Subregion, coordinates implementation of regional projects and provides technical support to Governments through local rural development approaches.

SLM is working to foster partnerships with various United Nations System Agencies, particularly the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and is developing synergies designed to enhance impact through joint programmes. It has also developed partnerships with both the public and private sectors, and has reached significant agreements with subregional research centres as well as with other regional interlocutors concerned with individual Government perspectives.

Adoniram Sanches Peraci

Sub-regional Coordinator for Mesoamerica and FAO Representative in Panama and Costa Rica

A Brazilian national, he has a master's degree in Rural Development from the Post Graduate College of Mexico and a degree in Agronomy from the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil.Mr. Sanches Peraci has extensive experience in the development and implementation of public policies and projects to strengthen food and nutrition security and rural development.

Currently, Mr. Sanches Peraci works as Subregional Coordinator for Mesoamerica and FAO Representative in Panama and Costa Rica.

Mr. Sanches Peraci started his career in April 1993 as Project Coordinator in Food Security and Nutrition for the Fe y Alegría Foundation, Brazil. Food and Nutritional Security Project Coordinator for the Fe y Alegria Foundation, Brazil. From April 1999 to December 2002 he worked as the Director of Rural Insurance and Microfinance at the NGO DESER - Department of Rural Socio-economic Studies, Brazil.

In March 2003, he was appointed Director of Technical Assistance and Rural Financing (PRONAF) of the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA) of the Federal Government of Brazil. Development (MDA) of the Federal Government of Brazil. From January 2007 to December 2010, he was the National Secretary of Family Agriculture of the MDA of the Federal Government of Brazil. Mr Sanches Peraci joined FAO in January 2011 as Food Security and Nutrition Officer in the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean. Senior Policy Officer and from January 2015 until his appointment in December 2018, Mr. Sanches Peraci was Coordinator of Strategic Programmes of the FAO Regional Office.

Mr. Sanches Peraci currently serves as Sub-regional Coordinator for Mesoamerica and FAO Representative in Panama and Costa Rica.
