THE OBJECT of this book is to introduce the practicing forester to the fundamental principles of sampling in forestry and to the techniques of inventory used throughout the world in all fields of forest management and silviculture. It also aims to show the direction in which future development can be expected to lead where present-day techniques are unsatisfactory.
The book appears in two volumes. The first volume contains chapters on the fundamental statistics of forest inventory and on the use of aerial photographs in forest inventory. The second volume is expected to be published in 1966 and will contain chapters on the techniques used in ground survey, the processing and evaluation of data, the planning and execution of inventory projects, the choice of techniques and the review of the forest inventory methods at present in use in the different parts of the world.
Dr. Loetsch has carried out several field assignments for FAO.
