CHILE

Forest Road Construction Engineer

To assist in the designing, planning and establishment of a forest road network to facilitate forest harvesting in state-owned native forest lands as well as in pine plantations.

Contract - 3 years

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Forestry Instructor

To analyze training needs of the country and to establish and operate an intermediate-level technical school to provide two-year training in technical forestry; to design and administer on-the-job training in a wide variety of forestry skills.

IRAN

Forest Economics

To undertake a preliminary appraisal of the country's present and prospective wood requirements, and of the economic availability of wood from domestic-sources, and in the light of the results of this appraisal identify in more detail the markets in northern Iran and, in collaboration with the other members of the project concerned with production, evaluate the cost and other economic factors necessary for preparation of proposals for the development of industrial and other wood products from the project area. Advise and assist in the economic aspects of other parts of the project program, as required.

TURKEY

Forest Industries

To make an evaluation of possibilities of forest industries development including the preparation of detailed plans for the location and establishment of selected forest industries, notably sawmilling and pulp and paper production. Duties will include co-operation with consultants engaged on detailed marketing and feasibility studies.

Contract - 4 years

TANZANIA

Sawmilling Engineer

To advise on the technical and economical feasibility of improvement of working techniques and expansion of existing forest industries, mainly sawmilling, as well as on the creation of new plants; to supervise the establishment of a demonstration softwood sawmill to be erected during the project operations and to organize and carry out training of counterpart staff in the operation and maintenance of equipment as well as in the overall management of sawmilling operations. The incumbent will be assisted by a sawmill instructor at the technical level.

MALAYSIA

Tree Nursery Specialist

To select the sites, construct and manage three forest nurseries with overhead irrigation for the production of planting stock of quick-growing species, especially tropical conifers, and to train counterpart professional and supervisory personnel in these activities.

Contract - 3-4 years

AFGHANISTAN

Watershed Management

To organize and conduct training courses and demonstrations in various aspects of watershed management within the Kunar forest region; duties will include the preparation of a comprehensive land-use plan for the Kunar region.

Contract - 2½ years

MEXICO

Silviculture

To develop methods of silviculture and management for the broadleaved forests of the tropical zone of Mexico; to advise on broader problems such as the selection of areas for afforestation or the suitability of areas of existing forest for conversion to other use. The job requires experience of tropical forest administration as well as a sound knowledge of tropical silviculture and management.

Contract - 3 years

Gross salaries ranging from U.S.$9.000 to $15.000 within the United Nations scales are assessed on qualifications and experience. There are substantial extra benefits: paid leave, family allowances, educational grants, etc.

Candidates should have a degree in forestry or closely related subject field, and at least 7 to 10 years of professional practical experience. Very good knowledge of one of the working languages of FAO (English, French or Spanish); knowledge of a second language an asset.
