Dictionary of forestry

by Professor Dr. JOHANNES WECK

GERMAN, ENGLISH, FRENCH, SPANISH AND RUSSIAN

THE DICTIONARY OF FORESTRY, gives more than 10,000 terms in German, English, French, Spanish and Russian, for use in science as well as forestry practice. The authors and publishers have followed the recommendations of the joint FAO/IUFRO Committee on Bibliography and Terminology. The committee urged the early completion of a multilingual dictionary at its 12th session, in Vienna, 1961. Compilation began in 1962.

Technical terms relative to forest products have been included only when of direct interest to forestry work. Consideration has also been given to the fact that forestry terminology developed differently in different language areas, in direct relation to the various forestry activities carried out in the respective regions. The Anglo-American technical language, for example, is rich in such fields as logging, transport and fire control, while the German has more silvicultural terms.

The inclusion of so many terms in practical forestry makes the dictionary a particularly valuable aid in teaching and technical assistance in countries with developing forestry management. The dictionary will certainly serve international co-operation in the field of forestry.
