FOREWORD

The first part of the report presents the calculation of the Appreciation of the Chilean forest resource for the period 1985-1996. The information that feeds the model comes from statistics constructed under the bases of information given by enterprises and projection realized by de Chilean Forest Institute (INFOR).

This calculation only considered plantations denominated exotic - Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus sp. - excluding the native forests; this decision, already explained in the Terms of Reference, obeys mainly on the difficulty to get information on the inventory of native species.

The second part shows the methodology used.

The third and fourth part of the work shows the outputs of the calculation for each species separately. With no doubt, it shows the more importance of the plantations of Pinus radiata (75.6%) over Eucalyptus sp. (16.8%) and other species (7.6%).

Finally, the fifth part of the paper shows the most important antecedents of the Chilean forest sector.

This document was presented by Mr Ignacio Cerda Vargas and Ricardo Núñez Sandoval for the Forest Resource and National Income Accounts project, FAO, Rome. The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable participation of José Jofré González in the calculation procedures and equally important comments and suggestions along the text.
