Beach goers will tell you there is a good news and bad news about sea urchins. The bad news is that if a bather's bare foot comes into contact with urchins spines, it is painful and the spines, once embedded in the skin, are very difficult to remove. The good news is that the shell makes a lovely souvenir of a visit to the shore. More good news, urchins are a profitable resource from the sea. This paper briefly describes the biology, ecology and the commercial aspects of sea urchins.
