In opening, Mr. A.G. Woodland, Programme Leader of the South China Sea Fisheries Development and Coordinating Programme (SCSP), welcomed the participants of the Workshop. He thanked the Director of the Department of Fisheries of the Government of Thailand for having originally agreed to host the Workshop, although the SCSP had later changed the workshop venue in view of financial constraints.
Mr. Kachornsak Wetchagarun of Thailand, Convenor/ Chairman of the Workshop, summarized the purpose of the Workshop and also outlined some of the major issues and recommendations of the 1980 IPFC “Symposium on the Development and Management of Small-Scale Fisheries” which are relevant to this Workshop. He also reiterated the importance of referring to the objectives set for the Workshop in the Prospectus.
