4. GROUP DISCUSSION

Having given due recognition of the urgency for immediate action to alleviate the present state of poverty of the small, rural coastal fishing communities, the Workshop unanimously agreed that national and regional efforts should be directed towards:

  1. the identification of the major problems presently confronting these communities with a view to proposing additional/alternative sources of employment and income; and

  2. the collection and analysis of information required for planning long-term strategies for the development and management of this fishery sector.

Two groups were therefore formed to discuss these issues with a view to making recommendations proposals for consideration by the Workshop.
