Economic, Processing and Marketing Study for Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Artemia salina

Freshwater Prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii)*

  1. determine the economic status of large, medium and artisanal hatcheries and production farms for M.R. in Thailand.

  2. assess the current supply of M.R. in Thailand from natural, farmed and import sources.

  3. project the future home market for M.R. within Thailand in terms of quantity, value and form.

  4. report on current, and predict future, demand for M.R. outside Thailand. Comment on current and future supplies of M.R. from natural and farmed sources from the countries which compete to supply world demand.

  5. assess the potential for export of M.R. from Thailand. Identify prime market areas and competing products and countries.

  6. following e) above, suggest what special requirements must be fulfilled if Thailand is to develop its home and potential export markets for M.R. In particular, requirements for processing, packaging and shipping; regulations; and the distributive channel network for each market must be defined.

  7. suggest how best the government can support a disciplined expansion of the M.R. industry in Thailand, assessing the national economic benefit of the industry.

  8. make a cost/benefit analysis on restoring natural waters and recommend what government action should be taken.

  9. recommend methods for continuous updating of the results of this study.

Brine Shrimp (Artemia salina)**

  1. study the existing commercial production of A.S. in Thai salt farms and assess current production, processing and distribution system.

  2. assess current product value and economics of production of A.S.

  3. determine the national demand for A.S. and predict the time interval before this demand is fulfilled from local sources.

  4. using knowledge of the world market for A.S., required if and how seek entry to this market, with special reference to market location and to the processing, quality, marketing, and distributive requirements of the market.

  5. predict the effect of increased production of A.S. in Thailand and elsewhere and possible changes in demand on product value and the long–term economic feasibility of A.S. production in Thailand.

  6. recommend how best the government can follow up its technical success in A.S. production in Thailand to support the development of a commercially successful industry.

* Henceforth referred to as M.R.

** Henceforth referred to as A.S.

b Estimated by multiplying the total production area (rai) by a stocking rate of 11,000 post-larvae per rai.

c This estimate is much lower than the estimate mentioned elsewhere (Singholka, et al., 1980; New et al., 1980) where the figure given for ‘actual production’ was based on ‘current potential hatchery production’.
