PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE SITE EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT
AND COLLECTING TRIP AT THE PROJECT SITE

1. INTRODUCTION

Sorsogon was selected as the site of this project because of the presence of well developed reef areas as potential areas for farming, the presence of several potentially good species of Gracilaria and the need of the developing alternative means of livelihood for the coastal inhabitants due to the highly depleted state of the shallow-water fishery resources.

The developmental objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the socio-economic conditions of the fishing communities dependent on coastal fisheries for livelihood by developing alternative employment and income generating opportunities through the development of an expanded and diversified seaweed farming industry.

This report contains the results of the initial field evaluation and assessment of the project site and its seaweed resources conducted in November and December 1991 and preliminary inventory of the species of Gracilaria indigenous in the area and a general impression of the attitude and perception of the target groups of fishermen/residents and local government officials towards the project.
