TERMS OF REFERENCE POST 11-03 :

Description of Duties :

  1. To follow up on consultancy of 6/7 - 26/8/90.

    1. To formulate and initiate a research programme to develop optimal needs for freshwater prawn and marine shrimp including

      1. demonstration of lipid and amino acid analysis technique.
      2. designing of nutritional experiments for brood stock and grow out.
      3. Advise on feed formulation for freshwater prawn and marine shrimp.

    2. To provide in service training of national staff on shrimp nutrition with special reference to amino acids and lipids.

    3. To advise on appropriate equipment needed for studies and lipids and amino acids and their installation and operation.

  2. To evaluate progress of project THA/89/003 and advise FIOD, Rome as soon as possible on need and justification for 6 months extension as requested by NPM and agreed in principle at the tripartite review (added to TOR by FIOD).

  3. To submit a technical report at end of assignment.

The arrival was delayed from the planned date of 1 September to 12 September by FAO, Rome processing of contract and issuance of travel authority.

On arrival the TOR was focused upon review of progress of THA/89/003 to date and need for 6 months extension to complete the objectives of the project in view of delays in delivery of extruder for experimental feed mill and other delays in receipt of ordered laboratory equipment necessary for prompt and orderly demonstrations and in-service staff training by the consultants. Also a delay was obvious in recruitment and implementation of the feed-technologist to provide in service training for operation of the only recently completed and installed experimental feed mill equipment. A report was developed and transmitted to FIOD, Rome concurring in the need for a six months extension, and in addition suggesting that the larval feed expert consultancy should be deleted because of the late date and short remaining months for project tenure, and that these funds be used to purchase spare parts and missing minor equipment, glassware and supplies to provide a normal operating laboratory inventory which would allow continuous operations for a short period until the Department of Fisheries could arrange to underwrite the major research and development projects underway at the project at the time of Project completion on 30 June 1992.

Subsequent efforts were focused upon training personnel to use the Gas Liquid Chromatograph, for fatty acid analysis of 10 potential lipid sources for shrimp and fish feeds, for demonstrations and staff personnel training in vitamin C assays of feedstuffs, feed mashes, and finished feeds, and for preliminary amino acids standard mixtures on the High Performance Liquid Chromatograph equipment. Proforma for research projects in lipid research and for vitamin research projects were developed with the staff according to priorities for species requirement studies furnished by the National Project Manager.

The experimental feed mill and supporting quality control laboratory is now operational and in concert with the feed technologist consultant, several diet formulae were developed for testing efficacy of feed manufacture for producing catfish and shrimp feeds for production tests.
