2. BOOKS

(05) On pages 6 to 44 lists of books are presented, that are advised to be bought by FRI for an immediate start of its libraries. The lists were drafted by the FAO-research planning advisor; additions made by the senior FRI staff (marked “FRI”), were added in the final edition. Some of the additions could not be provided in a complete form, but since they came from FRI they can be easily completed later on.

The books have been presented separately for each research programme of FRI, according to the codes used in the research masterplan. The stations where the books should be placed follow then automatically:

Books for programmes R and V, both concentrated on processing, quality control, and marketing, could both be allocated to Paikgacha or Cox's Bazar. It is advised to place them at the station where ultimately this research programme will have most emphasis.

(06) By dividing books over stations, often dilemmas arose: many handbooks are needed in various stations. Books on culture technologies, for example, are needed in FARS, RFRS, and BFRS, and books on fisheries stock assessment in RFRS and MFTRS. Since it is not practical to move handbooks regularly up and down through the country, it is advised to buy these books double, or sometimes even triple. In the lists the books concerned are indicated with an asterisk (*), followed by the code of the other programme(s) for which the book is needed. By doing so, the total amount of books advised to be procured comes to about 500.

(07) In listing books to be purchased, choices had to be made: the amount of available books in the broad fields of fisheries and aquaculture is much larger than the about 435 different issues presented in this report. The criteria used for selection were as follows:

(08) The lists of books present only a starting-point for the libraries of FRI. The central librarian should immediately request the main publishers of fisheries books to keep FRI aware of new publications, and the FRI-management should allow enough financial space in its yearly budgets to procure new handbooks, conference proceedings, and manuals from abroad. A yearly amount equivalent to US$ 1,500 is expected to cover the needs.

For procurement of the books advised in the present report an estimated amount of US$ 20,000 is needed. It is advised to approach FAO/UNDP for a one-time donation to update FRI's library according to the present FAO-advice.
