8. PROPOSAL FOR REGIONAL CO-OPERATION

A regional programme on forest genetic resource conservation needs to be formulated in order to develop strategies and techniques for conserving threatened and endangered species in the region. A database will also need to be created for target species and those requiring urgent conservation measures in the region.

Specific actions to be undertaken will include:

- carrying out taxonomic and genecological explorations of threatened and endangered species;

- undertaking collections of reproductive materials for endangered and threatened species for field planting both in in situ and ex situ;

- changing regulations on selection of species for logging in order to avoid over-exploitation of those species which cannot be adequately regenerated;

- carrying out training programmes on forest genetic resource conservation and promoting community participation in gene resource conservation.
