Five priority species have been identified, in order of priority, as follows (Dlamini, 1998):
- Sclerocarya birrea
- Baquertiodendron megalismontanium
- Syzigium cordatum
- Xeminia caffra
- Vangueria infausta
The priority actions that have been identified are:
- tree improvement: species, provenance and family trials;
- establishment of seed orchards in situ and ex situ (of seedling and clonal seed orchards);
- identification and management of superior seed source: in situ and ex situ;
- progeny trials.
The existing knowledge gaps identified are the following:
- unskilled personnel;
- decision makers are not versed with tree domestication; therefore, domestication is not given the priority it deserves;
- farmers are not trained in issues of domestication and tree improvement.
