6. GENERAL CONCLUSION

The project achieved very good results in the artisanal production of Penaeus indicus but a demonstration of the economics remains to be done taking into account the specificity of the Kenyan conditions. Artisanal production seems to have a limited future and the Ngomeni technology has to be completed and extended to include P. monodon cultured on a semi-industrial scale. To develop such programme, the engineering of the aquafarm has to be completed; a reorganization of the team is necessary to attach a truly scientific management that will permit a real transfer of technology.

To quote a Kenyan Fisheries Department officer “the project will be a success when the local staff will be able to operate it by themselves”; from a commercial point of view, it will be a success when the salt operators turn to shrimp farming.
