5. CONCLUSIONS

The initial results obtained from private Tilapia fingerling producers in Migori District are encouraging, in spite of the fact that none of the farmers actively managed their ponds for fingerling production. The sale of some 47 000 fingerlings at a cost of Ksh 1.00 a piece represents a significant boost to their incomes. These fish were used to restock abandoned ponds, ponds of new farmers, and restocking of on-going enterprises.

No farmers, however, adapted the methods taught in the training course, and no farmers actually raised fingerlings as an end to itself. The initial assumption that with the proper equipment and training, the farmers would be able to actively produce and market Tilapia fingerlings on their own with out additional support was erroneous. It is clear that there is considerable effort needed to further promote and develop this activity to its full potential.
