The Project has constructed one main hatchery and four smaller facilities to produce Clarias fingerlings and supply approximately 500.000 per year to farmers in Western Kenya. these hatcheries are located in at different altitudes and have different water supplies. A specialist in the propagation and pond culture of Clarias gariepinus in Sub-Saharan Africa is required for one month to under take the following:
To analyze the existing methodology used by the project and advise the project management and staff of each farm on improvements of existing techniques in both the propagation and pond rearing of Clarias gariepinus.
To conduct a 2 or 3 day training course for technical officers, farm supervisors and other selected individuals on appropriate clarias propagation and production techniques.
To recommend specific techniques in Clarias propagation which could be adapted by small scale rural farmers and the project.
A draft report emphasizing detailed recommendations should be submitted to the project management before the end of the mission.”
The mission was scheduled from 16-7-1994 to 15-8-1994. However due to administrative procedures Government clearance was only obtained at 22-7-1994. Therefore the mission was shorter as planned as unfortunately the consultant had other commitments after 16-8-1994.
