1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

The main phase of the project “Development of small-scale fish-farming in the Lake basin” took place under the number KEN/80/006 and ended in March 1987.

A second phase was decided and signed on 6 May 1988 under the number KEN/86/027 and started effectively on the 1st August 1988. the

Lake Basin Development Authorithy (hereinafter called LBDA) being the government implementing agency, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (hereinafter called FAO) being the executing agency.

As over one year elapsed between the departure of the first phase's FAO Team Leader and the beginning of the second phase, it was needed to determine first of all the present situation of the different project sites by means of field visits.

1.2 Objectives

The objectives of the present review of the situation of the project sites are:

  1. to define the actual condition and productivity of the different fishfry production centres;
  2. to define by representative sampling the actual situation of the fishfarmers beneficiaries of the project;

This will allow to:

  1. settle the priorities in the implementation of the second phase (recommendations);
  2. elaborate an immediately effective work plan.
