The Aquaculture for Local Community Development (ALCOM) is an inter regional programme executed by the <A HREF =“http://www.fao.org”>Food and Agriculture Organization</A> (FAO). It was endorsed as part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) by the Council of Ministers in 1989.<P>

ALCOM aims to improve the living standards of rural communities by increasing their income and improving the protein content in their diets through the practice of aquaculture and improved fisheries management. ALCOM achieves this aim by testing and developing methods and techniques appropriate for rural small scale fish farming and community - based fisheries management. Successes achieved, ideas derived and lessons learnt are applied on a wider scale by member governments. <P>

<HR><P>

ALCOM's work is spread among four action programmes:<P>

<OL>
<LI><B>Aquaculture</B> for small-scale farmers. Four aquaculture pilot projects are ongoing in Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. The pilot projects aim to improve the integration of fish farming into the existing agriculture systems and improve fish production.<P>

<LI>Utilization of <B>small water bodies</B> for aquaculture and fisheries; Small reservoir fisheries management and production pilot projects are underway in Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.<P>

<LI>The <B>information service </B>disseminates information and aims to stimulate debate and discussions of development issues by the periodic publication of reports on technical, social and economic aspects of aquaculture development. A brochure on ALCOM's Information Service provides more details. Our library is currently based in Harare (National Parks complex, Sandringham drive). The library is open for public every working day from 8:00 til 13:00 and from 14:00 til 16:30. Pay us a visit! <P>
