The community-based management activities were carried out within the context of ALCOM's small water bodies programme whose overall development objective was the development of small water bodies fisheries management and production techniques which will enable local communities to fully benefit in terms of food and income.
The objectives of the pilot project in Zimbabwe were
to assess the suitability of Rapid Appraisal as a method to gather data about the communities around reservoirs in order to design and develop activities for small water bodies fisheries management; and,
to develop and test methodologies for initiating and implementing community-based management of fishery resources.
Two reservoirs, Mwenje and Mufurudzi, were selected for the pilot activities. This report documents the process of establishing community-based management at Mwenje dam.
