ANY OTHER MATTERS

48. FAO World Conference on Fisheries Management and Development - The Committee was informed of the FAO proposal to hold a World Conference on Fisheries Management and Development in 1984 (document CIFA/83/Inf.11).

49. The Committee noted the procedures and arrangements which have already been taken to organize the Conference.

50. The Committee expressed its satisfaction for the inclusion of the potential role of inland water fisheries and aquaculture among the topics to be discussed by the FAO World Conference on Fisheries Management and Development.

51. Fishery development in Lake Tanganyika - The delegate of Zambia speaking in the name of the countries sharing the resources of Lake Tanganyika, informed the Committee that representatives from Burundi, Tanzania, Zaire and Zambia had held a second ad hoc meeting (the first one having been held during the fourth session of CIFA) to discuss the status of the proposed regional project for Lake Tanganyika. He asked FAO to inform the riparian countries on the status of the regional project and reiterated the wishes expressed at the fourth session that FAO spare no efforts in identifying financial support for the project. He re-emphasized the need to maintain periodic meetings between the countries and requested FAO to use its good auspices to facilitate these meetings.

52. Congo/Zaire river basin fishery - The delegate of Congo informed the Committee of the necessity to make an assessment of fisheries potentials in the Congo/Zaire river basin and to set up a regional programme for the development of fisheries. He expressed the wish to obtain any available information on this subject.

53. The FAO Secretariat explained to the Committee the activity of FAO in the Congo/Zaire basin area and promised to provide the delegate of Congo with any available information on the subject.

54. The delegate of Zaire supported the delegate of Congo regarding the necessity of setting up a programme of fishery development in the Congo/Zaire river basin. He informed the Committee of the activities already started by the countries sharing that basin.

55. River Nile - The Egyptian delegation suggested a project for the development of fisheries and aquaculture along the river Nile, whose habitat has changed considerably after the storage of water in Lake Nasser.
