ABSTRACT

This paper briefly reports on observations made by members of the Project Socio-Economic Group on two field missions to landings around the Katebo area, along the northwestern shoreline of Lake Victoria (Uganda). Some basic characteristics of the landings are reviewed, along with development problems and prospects. Particular note is made of: the hazard posed by the spread of water hyacinth in this sections of the Lake; the need to improve land and waterborne transport services, Fisheries Department extension services and landing site development planning; the role of industrial fishing ventures; and a new project in crocodile farming that is commencing at Katebo.

EDITORIAL NOTE

Mr. Paul Kisaamo was appointed as Economist in the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development in January 1990 and posted to the Planning Unit of the Ministry of Animal Industry and Fisheries. He was seconded to work with the FISHIN Project as a National Counterpart Economist in November 1990. His Project posting was brief however since he was transferred to Arua as District Economist in June 1991. While with the SEC Group he assisted in the Project's Frame Survey activity in the Katebo area, and also helped to carry out the SEC Lake Victoria Fishing Community Survey. His contributions to the SEC work programme are gratefully acknowledged.

Socio-Economic Field Reports (SEC Fld Rpts) are intended as occasional working documents/briefs/notes covering on-going SEC Group activities, issued for the information of Project team members and other interested colleagues. Length, format, and content vary according to the type and scope of activity reviewed (field trips, surveys, studies, workshops, etc.). It is cautioned that observations and findings presented in the Reports should be treated as preliminary and subject to further verification.
