TABLE 1. AGENCIES INVOLVED IN FISHERIES STATISTICS COLLECTION AND MANAGEMENT

AGENCY
RESPONSIBILITIES
Field staffAFDOs or FAs with duties of primary data collection at landing sites, and of carrying out basic law enforcement and extension work.
Regional officersResponsible for overall administration of local fisheries, licensing and law enforcement, evaluating and monitoring statistics for stock management, and overseeing fisheries development activities.
Local Government AuthoritiesIssue fish traders' licenses at district level; compile lists of traders for transmission through District Fisheries Officers to Fisheries Headquarters.
Customs postsSubmit regional returns on quantities of fish imported and exported through border stations, together with names of importers and exporters and the license numbers of exporters.
Fish marketsGenerally staffed by Fisheries Marketing Assistants and AFDOs who are responsible for the collection of data on volumes and prices of fresh and processed fish being sold.
HeadquartersOverall administration of data and information resources in the Department; collation of returns from all sources; quality assessment, compilation, tabulation, processing, and analysis of national data; dissemination of information through publications and annual reports; appropriate follow-up activities for the benefit of sectoral planning; and liaison with other agencies and projects concerned with the collection, analysis and use of fisheries statistics.
