CHAIRMAN: At the outset, may I thank Member Nations and delegates for having elected India and me to chair Commission I. While I myself am slightly new to the procedures of FAO, I am sure that wit your help, advice and cooperation plus the advice of my colleagues here, we shall be able to compie the task assigned to us within the time schedule.

The names of the Vice-Chairmen are still being finalized and the moment we receive the information shall mention this to you. Similarly, I understand that the names of the Drafting Committee are ir the process of being finalized and once these get through we shall announce the names here.

As far as our work is concerned, as you are aware, we have 17 meetings scheduled, out of which 15 sessions would be to discuss six substantive items and two sessions for adopting the report. A the documents which have been listed in document C 87/INF/11 give us the background material for discussions during the course of our deliberations. I would suggest that we have two sessions fror 9.30 to 12.30 and 14.30 to 17.30. To see that we get the best return on the investment in the interpreters, may I request delegates to be on time so that we do not have to wait, for want of a quorum, as we had to do this morning.

Many of the subjects which are before us, including "Agriculture Toward 2000" and also the feasibi study on expanding the provision of agricultural inputs as aid-in-kind are items which are of importance to us, and more particularly the progress report on international agricultural adjustme! Agenda Item 8. These have special relevance because they place before us the progress on the Twel Guidelines which were issued by the Conference in 1975.
