Chelydra serpentina Linnaeus

Snapping turtle. (Chelydridae). Fresh waters of eastern and central North America. Reported to be cultivated in Japan. Very fierce and may leave waters for certain periods. Edible.

Malaclemya terrapin centrata (Latreille)

Southern diamond-back terrapin. (Emydidae). Carolina to Florida in U.S.A. Hatcheries have been established in Chesapeake Bay region. Adults feed on fish and crabs, and young ones on fish and oysters.

Malaclemys terrapin littoralis Hay

Texas diamond-back terrapin. (Emydidae). Along coast of Texas and southward in U.S.A. Details same as M. terrapin centrata.

Malaclemys terrapin terrapin (Schoepff)

Northern diamond-back terrapin. (Emydidae). U.S.A. Extensively eaten in U.S.A. and bred in terrapin farms.

Trionyx sinensis Wiegmann
Syn. Amyda sinensis Wiegmann

Soft-shell turtle. (Trionychidae). Rivers and muddy bottoms of shallow waters in China. Cultivated in ponds in China (Taiwan). Production reported to be about 300 kg per year. Carnivorous and voracious species.
