  MADAGASCAR

The 2003 main paddy crop is forecast at 2.8 million tonnes, 5 percent above last year’s level. The coarse grain crop, mainly produced in southern parts, is estimated to be reduced by 14 percent compared to last year due to drought. Cereal imports and food aid needs are forecast in the new marketing year at 353 000 tonnes.
