A recent FAO/CILSS Crop Assessment Mission provisionally estimated cereal production in 2003 to have increased by 400 000 tonnes to a record 3.7 million tonnes. In spite of this good harvest, the country will need to import about 360 000 tonnes of cereal, mainly wheat, rice and maize for which the country has a structural deficit.
