REPORT ON THE WORK OF THE INTERAFRICAN FOREST INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATION ON WILDLIFE

19. The Secretary-General of the InterAfrican Forest Industries Association (IFIA) briefed the Working Party on the activities of this Organization on wildlife. These include scientific work on the impact of logging, especially roads, on wildlife and implementing measures to ameliorate this impact. An example of impact amelioration is the practice of maintaining links between the forest canopy on opposite sides of a road by selecting trees which have canopies that overlap above the road, thus providing free movement of primates from one side of forest roads to the other.

20. Another aspect of this work is engaging with communities to ensure that they benefit from wildlife without commercializing it. IFIA also works with leading conservation NGOs and governments to minimize the negative impacts of logging. He further informed about measures taken by logging companies to control subsistence hunting and prohibit commercial hunting in the Forestry Concessions. Breeding of key wildlife species as well as aquaculture activity are envisaged to be supported as alternative to bushmeat hunting. The collaborative work with FAO and other partners to produce a manual on sustainable forest management and on reduced impact logging was mentioned and shown as signs of effective change in the forest industry community.
