A joint FAO/CILSS Crop and Food supply Assessment recently estimated the output from the maize crop at some 4 042 tonnes mostly produced in Santiago Island (over 50 percent). Total imports of cereal in the marketing year ending in October 2005 are forecast to be around 100 000 tonnes. Taking into account an anticipated commercial cereal import of 41500 tonnes and 28000 tonnes of food aid pledges, the total uncovered deficit for the year is about 31000 tonnes.
