ABSTRACT
 
The objectives of this consultancy, carried out from 1–29 December 1978 at the Fish Culture Research Institute, were to evaluate the operation of the water recycling fish rearing plant and to elaborate methods for improvement if required.
The Consultant found physical features of the system excellent and biochemical parameters within acceptable limits.
Two changes in the structure were recommended: enlarging waste drains to permit more rapid draining of fish tanks to the waste canal and additional filter media to facilitate backflushing.
Procedures for sanitizing the entire recycling system were recommended.
A proposal for monitoring several important water quality parameters was elaborated.
Research projects, under the general headings of nutrition and physiology were suggested. Basic information is needed in these fields as intensive rearing becomes more important.
The production of high-value fish such as European catfish, Silurus glanis, and eel, Anguilla anguilla, in rearing space not needed for experiments was recommended.
The importance of good fish hygiene in the recycling system was emphasized. Four methods of minimizing the chance of disease were proposed. These recommendations in order of importance were:
  1. All stages of fish rearing, i.e., egg incubation, fry and fingerling rearing be carried out in disease-free water.

  2. Quarantine of fish destined for the recycle system until it is reasonably assured that they are disease-free.

  3. Continuous disinfection of the circulating water with ultraviolet radiation or ozone treatment.

  4. Periodic sterilization of the entire system with chlorine.
