EFFECTIVENESS OF NEW SURVEY

Only two examples of data are given here, one for Tegal in Central Java and the other for Pelabuhan Ratu in West Java.

(1) Pilot Survey in Tegal District (See Table 1)

The pilot survey covered three months, from September to November, 1974.

  1. A case where the catch is directly sold to fish dealers seldom occurs at the Tegal landing centre. Therefore, the difference of catch between the fish market record and estimates obtained through the L-II Survey is very small.

  2. In Tegal District there are 17 marine villages which are concerned with the small-scale fishery. However, fish auction markets are developed only in seven villages. In the past catch data collected by Tegal Fishery Service were limited to the catch handled by these fish markets only. The pilot survey revealed that the catch sold through these markets was about 30 percent less than the actual catch.

(2) L-II Survey at Pelabuhan Ratu (See Table 2)

This is the outcome of an actual L-II Survey, which has been applied to the drift gillnet fishery at Pelabuhan Ratu.

  1. It is clearly noted from the catch of sample trips that nearly 30 percent of the total catch is sold directly to fish dealers.

  2. The part of the catch taken for home consumption of crews is 6.3 percent of total catch, which seems to be quite reasonable.

  3. After applied ratio estimation, 70 037 kg of catch recorded at the auction market was revised to 108 619 kg.

The L-II Survey was applied to the Tegal major landing place only. The L-III Survey was applied to all the rest of landing places by choosing two sample villages.
