The fishpen site at the Fish Farming Centre appears well suited for pen culture. Fig. 1 shows a cross section of the area seaward from the project site. The depth and major characteristics of this lagoon area are shown. From left to right the diagram shows the rough and deep sea (Zone “A”) and the shallow and protected sound/lagoon (Zone “B”). The two are separated from each other by the coral reef (Zone “C”), which protects the sound/lagoon from rough waters. Within the lagoon, part of the water is deep enough (4 m or deeper) for cage culture (“D” area), and part is the right depth (1 to 2 m deep) for fishpen culture (“E” area).
The area of the lagoon immediately adjacent to the FFC shoreline was surveyed to determine the area with the right depths of 1 to 2 m deep at mean low tide that would be suitable for fishpens. It was found that an area of approximately 2 ha has a suitable depth for fishpen culture. However, with an area left free for boat passage, plus the small areas of unused space around the two rectangular pens, the total area used for pens would occupy 0.75 ha (Fig.2). This would consist of space for six pens. The two demonstration pens will be constructed first. If this trial indicates that fishpens are feasible, then there is space for four more pens to be added later.
