1. INTRODUCTION

Following a recommendation made by the Seventh Session of the Working Party on Resources Evaluation (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, May 1984) the ad hoc Working Group on Demersal and Shrimp Stocks in Central Gulf of Guinea Statistical Division met at the Station de Recherches Halieutiques (SRH) of the Institut de Recherches Zootechniques (IRZ), Limbe, Cameroon at the kind invitation of the Government of the Republic of Cameroon from 6–10 May 1985.

The meeting was officially opened by the First Assistant Senior Divisional Officer, Mr. Nkwenti of the Southwest Province. Present at the opening ceremony were the Deputy Director of IRZ, Dr. Ngou Ngoupayou, a representative of the Police Departement of Limbe and the Technical Coordinator of the CECAF, Mr. Ansa-Emmim.

Mr. J.-C. Njock, Chief of the SRH, Cameroon was elected Chairman, and Mrs A. Aziablé of Benin as Vice-Chair person.

Experts from Cameroon, Nigeria, Togo, Benin and Ivory Coast were invited to participate following the recommendation of the Seventh Session of the Working Party on Resources Evaluation. The Working Group regretted the inability of experts from Nigeria and Togo to participate in the meeting. The list of 23 participants appears in Annex 1.

The agenda which appears in Annex 2 was adopted.

Messrs F.C. Roest (CECAF Programme), G.W. Ssentongo (FAO Headquarters) and M. Van der Knaap (CECAF Programme) were elected rapporteurs.

The CECAF Programme 1 wishes to express its gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Cameroon, and the Director of the Institut de Recherches Zootechniques for providing facilities for the meeting and also to the FAO Regional Office for Africa for sponsoring the meeting.
