The Government of Malaysia, assisted by the United Nations Development Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is engaged in the project Institutional Support for Majiukan Aquaculture Development (MAL/79/018) whose main objectives are to elaborate Majuikan's Aquaculture Programme for the Fourth Malaysia Plan, to develop a methodology for the design of aquaculture projects and draw up a programme for their effective implementation, and to develop aquaculture farms at Puchong, Selangor and Ban Merbok as demonstration and training centres.
As part of the project operations, FAO assigned Mr Michael New as Feeds Consultant from 1 November to 31 December 1985. The original terms of reference were modified as follows during a meeting at LKIM, Kuala Lumpur, on 8 November 1985:
Design and demonstrate trial methods for the formulation and improvement of feed formulae for seabass and grouper (cage culture) and penaeid shrimp (pond culture), with emphasis on the former. The experimental design and result reports would provide examples which could be used by national staff in initiating future experiments.
Evaluate and improve the fish and shrimp feed formulae proposed by MAL/77/008 (during the visit of a previous FAO feeds consultant).
Prepare a work programme to develop efficient and economical formulated feeds for penaeid shrimp, seabass and groupers.
Teach the national staff about nutrition and formulated feeds through on-the-job training.
Carry out trial production of the best possible diet from locally available materials for the specified species.
Recommend the equipment required for feed production at Sg. Merbok.
