3. RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. A four year programme for pearl culture should be initiated. It is to be noted that the TCP project was limited to a year while it would take two to three years for pearls to develop. The result is that pearl operations cannot be fully evaluated as the project did not last until the pearls could be harvested.

  2. The Government officers/trainees on pearl culture should continue operating on mussels to perfect the technique. More time should be devoted to this project.

  3. The programme of training rural farmers in pearl culture should be continued. Pearl culture can be an income-generating industry in the rural areas. As in China and Japan, pearl culture is a small family undertaking.

  4. Government officers who had undergone training on pearl culture should be sent on study/observation tours to a country with a developed pearl culture industry. Knowledge gained through this programme will enable them to have a better understanding for improving the activities in pearl culture.
