The Government of Greece, assisted by the United Nations Development Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is engaged in the project Development of Marine and Inland Aquaculture in Greece (FI:DP/GRE/002) whose objective is the preparation of a National Plan for Aquaculture Development, to increase the availability of farmed fish and reduce reliance on imported fish, fish products and fish feed.
As part of the project operations, FAO assigned Professor Allen J. Matty as consultant (fish feed technologist) from July to September 1987 with the following terms of reference:
The consultant will study the requirement for a development aquaculture industry for indigenous supplies of processed feed and in particular:
carry out pre-arranged programme of visits and meetings in conjunction with counterpart specialists;
review available information and prepare a synopsis of the present situation related to feed resources and feed manufacturing, resources of ingredients, applied research and development in feeds/fish nutrition in Greece;
prepare a synopsis of the types of feeds best suited for the various farmed species and appropriate for growth, together with the identification of any constraints;
clarify the impact of feed costs and quality on production economics and the scope for improving them by investment in Greece;
describe the potential for development and identify the zones where it should be considered on a priority basis;
propose strategies for enhancing fish feed production to support future aquaculture development;
provide limited technical assistance in response to particular problems encountered;
provide a two-day seminar on fish feed technology relevant to Greece;
prepare a report on main findings and recommendations suitable for inclusion as an appendix to the draft National Aquaculture Plan by the end of the assignment in Greece.
