The Government of Greece, assisted by the United Nations Development Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is engaged in the project Development of Marine and Inland Aquaculture in Greece (FI: DP/GRE/002) whose objective is the preparation of a National Plan for Aquaculture Development, to increase the availability of farmed fish and reduce reliance on imported fish, fish products and fish feed.
As part of the project operations, FAO assigned Dr R.H. Richards as consultant (fish pathologist/veterinarian) in August 1987 with the following terms of reference:
In collaboration with counterparts study the implications for a developing aquaculture industry of disease and contamination problems and to make proposals for effective control, and in particular:
carry out the pre-arranged programme of visits and meetings in conjunction with counterpart specialist (s);
review available information and prepare a synopsis of the present situation related to aquaculture pathology, including laws and regulations which can constrain development (e.g., quarantine for fish in ports), health/hygiene regulations for the sale of products, and applied research and development in fish health. Identify the areas of risk for a growing industry;
propose strategies for effective control, research and development in particular, to support aquaculture development. Assess the resources needed to implement these strategies;
provide limited technical assistance as required, in response to particular situations encountered;
provide a two-day seminar on the subject field with particular reference to Greece;
prepare a report on the main findings and recommendations suitable for inclusion in the draft National Plan as an appendix by the end of the assignment in Greece.
