Contribution of trypanotolerant livestock to development in zones affected by African animal trypanosomiasis

West and Central Africa are the only two tropical African regions with enough space as well as feed and water resources allow a rapid growth of animal production. Trypanotolerant livestock, well adapted to the existing stressful environment and, in particular, the presence of trypanosomiasis, can be found in these areas. A better knowledge of these trypanotolerant breeds, including their production parameters and their potentialities, would clearly show the present and future impact that such breeds might have on the development of trypanosomiasis-affected areas. However, to achieve the ambitious objectives assigned to trypanotolerant breeds, action must be taken promptly in the fields of research and development.
