4. SEC programmes: Highlights of results

4.1. Bangladesh: The rodent control campaigns
4.2. Malaysia: The rat control campaign
4.3. Thailand: The pest surveillance system campaign
4.4. Malaysia: The integrated weed management campaign
4.5. Zambia: Assisting small farmers through maize production campaign*
4.6. Applying SEC in population education through agriculture extension programmes

In this chapter, some of FAO's assisted SEC programmes will be described, and their important results will be highlighted. Examples on how SEC programmes were planned, implemented and evaluated within the context of FAO projects and incorporated into activities of national agricultural extension services will also be provided. Since the first SEC programme was implemented by an FAO project in Bangladesh in 1983, many other SEC replications had been carried out in different countries. Not all, however, had conducted the entire SEC process. Some activities were not completed because no follow-up support was made available. Others only conducted parts or elements of the SEC process which had been missing or weak (such as KAP survey, pretesting of extension materials, strategy development and planning, etc.), in order to enhance or strengthen their extension programmes. Figure 4-1 shows an inventory-analysis of FAO-supported SEC activities conducted in different countries.
