Influence of feeding on the production of Archachatina sp.

Captive-bred snails of the genus Archachatina were fed on a diet based on four fodder species: Leucaena leucocephala, Carica papaya, Tridax procumbens and Talinum triangulare. The parameters were the number of snails hatched, growth rates and mortality rates. Snails fed on Talinum produced fewer young than others but the difference was not significant. Mortality rates, however, were very high for snails fed on Leucaena leaves (84 percent). The best weight gains were obtained with papaya leaves (147 percent) and with Tridax (130 percent), while Talinum caused weight loss in adult snails and depressed their reproductive functions.
