LEGISLATION
-Allowable catch by foreign fishing vessels is limited on basis of resource trends, supported by appropriate scientific evidence, overall catch limits, and on the current local and foreign fishing situation.
-Legislation excludes highly migratory species from the exclusive management authority of Japan but includes anadromous species spawning in national waters through their migratory range.
-Vessel to bear identification marks.
-Permit to be kept on board vessel.

AGREEMENTS
Framework Agreement between Japan and the Republic of Korea of 22 June 1965 regarding reciprocal fishing, In force until notice is given
-Allocations are not fixed.
-Main points of Agreement are: establishment of 12 mile exclusive fishing zone, of a jointly-regulated fishing zone, and of a joint fisheries committee serving as advisory body for questions of joint regulation.
Framework Agreement between Japan and China of 15 August 1975 regarding reciprocal fishing, in force until notice is given
-Allocations are not fixed.
-Main points are: limitation set on vessel power, fishing areas defined, measures relating to safety operations, and establishment of a joint Japanese-Chinese Fisheries Committee to assess implementation of the Agreement and recommend Regulations.
Agreement between Japan and former USSR of 7 December 1984, renewed in 1995
Reciprocal non-fee quotas will remain at 100 000 m.t. for both countries; the Japanese fee-based quota was set at 18 000 t. for which Japan will pay former USSR $7.2 million.
