Particle Board

Consumption of particle board increased radically in countries of the Asia-Pacific over the last three decades. As shown in Table 45, total regional consumption jumped from 2 million m3 in 1982 to 4.6 million m3 in 1992, i.e. from 5% to 11% of global consumption. Although the region's world share is relatively small, several countries had sharp increases in consumption, especially China, the Republic of Korea, and Indonesia (Figure 9). In 1992, China surpassed Japan to become the region's largest consumer of particle board, with almost 1.4 million m3. Other major consumers are Japan with 1.2 million m3, the Republic of Korea with 727 thousand, and Australia with 658 thousand. Consumption of Indonesia also grew very quickly since the early 1980s.

Production of particle board doubled between 1982 and 1992, and totalled 4 million m3 in 1992, or 8% of the world's total (Table 46). The top producers in 1992 were China and Japan with about 1 million m3 each, Australia with 660 thousand m3, and Indonesia with 350 thousand. Production increased the fastest in China, most countries are self-sufficient except for the Republic of Korea, which supplied less than 38% of its consumption.

Figure 9. Consumption of particle board in China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia and Malaysia, 1961-1992.

Tables 47 to 49 show the data on imports and exports by country and territory from 1962 to 1992, and the direction of trade in 1992. Clearly, the Asia-Pacific region had very little internal trade and was basically a net importer of particle board. Total regional imports were 868 thousand m3 and total exports were 387 thousand m3 While less than 34% of the exports went to countries in other regions, more than half of the imports came from outside the region. Ranked by volume in 1992, the Republic of Korea was the largest importer with 451 thousand m3, followed by China with 158 thousand and Japan with 125. Indonesia, however, was the dominant exporter, with 116 thousand m3 (but 246 thousand m3 according to UN data sources, see Table 49). The United States has been the major supplier for the region, with 229 thousand m3 in 1992.
