THE GAMBIA:

Rains started in early June in the west and the centre. Significant rains over the east and the centre permitted wet plantings. Elsewhere, seasonably dry conditions prevail. Planting is expected to start in the weeks ahead with the onset of the rains. As a result of 1998 reduced harvest in some areas, localized seed availability problems are likely.
