A workshop was held at FAO headquarters in Rome from 17 to 19 March 1999 to initiate the preparatory phase of a UNEP/GEF/FAO project aimed at reducing the impact of tropical shrimp trawling fisheries on living marine resources through the adoption of environmentally friendly techniques and practices. This report summarizes the outcome of the workshop which was attended by FAO staff and government-appointed National Coordinators from 12 countries: Bahrain, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Indonesia, Nigeria, the Philippines, the United Republic of Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. The workshop reviewed the situation with regard to problems associated with shrimp exploitation as well as the multisectoral structure in place for consultation on such issues in each country.
